Biographies

Joshua Fischer, MD

Joshua graduated from the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and is currently completing his residency training in internal medicine at Rhode Island Hospital. He is planning a career in primary care.

Michael Sorrentino, MD

Michael graduated magna cum laude from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 2006 with a Bachelors of Science degree in psychobiology. He went on to earn his medical degree from SUNY Upstate College of Medicine, graduating cum laude and earning Alpha Omega Alpha honors. Michael is currently a third-year resident in internal medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and was accepted to a cardiology fellowship at SUNY Stonybrook. Michael enjoys restaurants and cooking, golfing, racket sports, volleyball, and watching movies.

Mary Beth grew up in Maryland and attended the University of Maryland, College Park for undergraduate school, completing a Bachelor of Science degree in cell and molecular biology and genetics in 2006. She then attended the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, graduating in 2010. She is currently a third-year resident in family medicine at the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island program in Pawtucket, R.I. Next year Mary Beth will be completing a fellowship in maternal-child health to pursue her career in family medicine with advanced obstetrics.
Authors
Jorge is an internal medicine resident at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence. Before residency he completed studies at the University of Miami Leonard Miller School of Medicine in Florida.

Eike is from Germany, where he worked as a paramedic before coming to the United States for medical school. He earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2012, and is continuing his training as a resident in emergency medicine at the University of Massachusetts. In his spare time, Eike is an avid ultra-marathoner.

Liz went to medical school at the University of Chicago and is currently a family medicine resident at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She will be starting a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars fellowship in July 2013, where she plans to study primary care delivery systems and financing.

Peter Chai, MD, MMS
Originally from Cleveland, Peter is a third-year emergency medicine resident at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He completed his undergraduate and medical school programs at Brown as well, also earning a Masters in Medical Science degree in biomedical engineering. During his residency, Peter has conducted research on cocaine intoxication and prescription drug abuse in the emergency department. He is planning on going into fellowship in toxicology after residency. He remains an adamant Cleveland Browns fan and an avid runner.

David Chu, MD
David grew up in the Boston area. As an undergraduate he attended Johns Hopkins University, where he majored in mathematics and was accepted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He then attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and was accepted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He is currently in his second year of residency in internal medicine at the Rhode Island Hospital/Miriam Hospital program associated with the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. David is pursuing a career in pulmonary/critical care medicine.

Caitlin grew up in Indianapolis, Ind., and attended Indiana University Bloomington, where she studied English, French, and biology. She graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and is now in her second year of internal medicine residency at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She is passionate about global health and plans to pursue an infectious disease fellowship. In her free time, Caitlin enjoys writing, kickboxing, and traveling.

Christopher grew up in Vermont before moving to Rhode Island to attend Rhode Island College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. He then attended Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he completed a Scholarly Concentration in Medical Education. He is currently a third-year resident in the family medicine residency program at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island. In his limited spare time, Chris enjoys watching football and spending time with his wife Marissa and their dog Sophie. After graduating, he hopes to work in private practice and incorporate medical education into his career.

Megha is a Florida native and completed her undergraduate studies and medical school at the University of Miami. She spent a year as a Zuckerman Fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health, where she earned a Master of Public Health degree. Currently Megha is a second-year resident in general internal medicine at Rhode Island Hospital, and is learning to appreciate the real winters of the Northeast. She is a yoga and chocolate enthusiast and loves to travel.

Originally from Naperville, Ill., Mike studied molecular biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After some time as a research assistant in Versailles, France, he joined the class of 2011 at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine. Mike completed his internship at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia in 2012 and is currently a resident in anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Johnson is a native of Los Angeles and attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., graduating with Bachelor of Arts degrees in biology and economics. He also earned his medical degree from Hopkins and is currently a resident in the plastic surgery program at Albany Medical College in New York.

Jerry completed his undergraduate studies in microbiology, immunology & molecular genetics at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2006. After graduating from the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine in 2011, he decided to pursue a career in diagnostic radiology and is currently a resident at the LAC+USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. In his free time, Jerry enjoys playing piano, computer programming, basketball, and the occasional death match on PlayStation 3.

Originally from West Hartford, Conn., Jonathan earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Communications from Ithaca College. He earned his medical degree from Ben Gurion University of the Negev in collaboration with Columbia University Medical Center. He is currently a resident in the department of family medicine at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island. Jonathan’s interests include reading (philosophy, religion, health), hiking, camping, sports (tennis, yoga, golf), cooking, and choir singing.

Originally from Rochester, N.Y., Julie earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the University of Notre Dame. She then spent a year doing genetics research at Duke University before starting medical school at SUNY Upstate in Syracuse. Julie plans to work in an outpatient clinic in Boston after completing residency.

David hails from Toledo, Ohio, and has research interests in health disparities, minority health care, and music in medicine.
